Earthquake!
So here I was, about to get into bad this morning (just before 1am) and the whole house started shaking!!! I’d figured it was an earthquake (houses don’t shake that often so…) and I had a flick on the news channels on TV, sure enough on Sky News, it was being reported that there was an earthquake felt in Leicestershire (my region) and other places across the UK.
This was somewhat good news, because I knew I wasn’t imagining it. Further reading this morning tells me that it was a 5.2 magnitude earthquake. And we don’t get many that size here in the UK.
Anyway, here is a link to the BBC News article
Sabre
I’m doing a bit of Shameless promoting now
Sabre is a plugin for the AmaroK music player (it’s a KDE application, but I still use it anyway), which will ping a Bluetooth Device (I use my mobile phone for this). If the device moves out of range, it will pause your music, and invoke the screensaver.
Currently it is in the early stages, but we are working on support for KDE distributions right now (currently works for Gnome only, though it is a key feature for v1.5). Feel free to download it from here, and report any bugs etc. here.
I hope you enjoy it!

Stupid Clients
I was reading a thread on the Ubuntu Forums earlier, and there was a link to a website containing a load of quotes from clients (as far as I’m aware, they’re all real as well…it’s definitely believable :p).
Anyway it gave me a good laugh, so I thought I’d share it with people ![]()
The top 20 quotes can be found here.
Wiki Editing
It’s not as geeky as it sounds. Purely because it isn’t Wikipedia
Instead it’s on http://wiki.ubuntu.com as I figured it’d be an easy way to get a little bit more involved in the Ubuntu community, without knowing how to get the program code and contribute through development.
I added a wiki page for myself, which can be found here.
On another note – I will be posting up my Pro’s & Con’s of Blu-Ray Vs HD DVD in the coming days.
Something Exciting
I read a really interesting Blog Post earlier about the new sub-corporation of the Mozilla Foundation called Mozilla Messaging. It details some exciting prospects for the future of Mozilla Thunderbird – the Open-Source email client. I’d recommend it to anybody for a read
Just to make it official – I am looking forward to the release of Thunderbird 3
Farewell
Somewhat annoyingly only a week and a half after I bought an HD DVD player…Blu-Ray emerges the victor of the High-Def Format “War”.
I’m not bothered though, as there’s still many films available for HD DVD
I read the rumors as I’m sure a lot of other people did over the weekend that Toshiba were pulling out of the HD DVD production, but I read the final news on the BBC News website earlier this morning.
So it’s been good, and in the end the superior (albeit more expensive) format won. Congrat’s, it’s just a shame it’s a Sony Corp technology.
Conky (Again)
So I’ve been asked by a couple of people to write a bit more about Conky such as, my config file for it. And how I installed it, how long it takes to configure, a few options that other people might like. So I’ll be posting it in parts in the coming days/weeks (it depends when I get a chance, I’m a bit busy at Uni right now
)
More to come soon!!
HD DVD Player
I bought one
I’ve been wondering whether to get one for ages. Even though the format looks somewhat doomed, I figured if I could get one cheap then it’d be worth it, seeing as there’s still 400+ titles out for the format
So I bought the add-on for my Xbox 360, for £50 ($97 US) which is around half the retail price everywhere I’ve seen. The HD-DVD I got with it was The Kingdom. I’ve also got the following ordered though a couple are out of stock on Play.com:
I’m looking forward to getting them, as so far the picture has been brilliant (though I’ve seen Full Metal Jacket in “HD” and it was worse than the normal DVD) as my TV supports 1080p input
I may post short reviews of the films when I’ve watched them.
Xbox Live – Down Again??
I seem to be having issues with Xbox Live again…very similar to those I was having just after Christmas and around New Year.
Also they seem to be relating to Call Of Duty 4 again which seems more than a coincidence to me. If it carries on I’ll be phoning Microsoft to see what I can get out of them for it, because I know that I’m not the only person that has been experiencing this problem.
Family Guy: Blue Harvest
I watched this the other day. Now I’m a huge Family Guy fan, but also a huge Star Wars fan…so I didn’t really know what to expect, but I really enjoyed it, it’s typical Family Guy, the characters even kept their own traits throughout the episode (which is an hour long special!!)
I’d definitely recommend it toany fan of Family Guy. And whats even better than this? The fact that they’ve confirmed the sequel (Episode 5) as Family Guy: Something Something Something Dark Side.
I’ve got to say…I can’t wait until I get to see that one! And I’m hoping for Family Guy: Return Of The Griffins
