Printer Sharing With Ubuntu Server

I've been trying for at least a week to get this working (with an Epson Stylus DX4200), and it's just not happened...until now!!!

Originally I tried (I don't know why, so don't ask) to share the printer over the samba share that I currently have in place on the network, as it seemed a good idea...at the time, I know no that it's something that should never be attempted (currently).

After many tedious tweakings of many various things, and still no printing across the network. I finally stumbled across this thread on the forums which I followed, and happily...it worked!!! I now have printing across the network. I checked by printing a test page from my laptop (Ubuntu) and then an XP desktop downstairs.

After all that effort of trying to share the printer via samba, it turns out that I managed to share it using ipp - which even Windows supports (though not many people seem to know about that). I think that the main issue I was having is that searching for how to share a printer via Ubuntu gave GUI options suited to the desktop, and not Ubuntu Server - which is CLI only, so I had to edit

/etc/cups/cupsd.conf

Anyway - it works now, I'm happy - and the rest of the family is happy too, and it's 10x more convenient than before.

Continuing The Planet Ubuntu Meme

Currently My PC's are named after characters from the Devil May Cry video game series (wikipedia link).

My server is called "sparda" after the "legendary demon slayer" and therefore my laptop is called "dante" (as you can see from Launchpad), after sparda's son.

On a side note - does anybody know why my Planet Ubuntu feed appears as a shortened version? It's both confusing, and annoying :(

From Intrepid To Hardy

Well I've gone back to Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy). It's not that I don't like Intrepid (8.10), quite the opposite - I love it, even the NewHuman theme has grown on me. Now I'm back on Hardy, I miss the darkness!!

The reason I moved back to Hardy - and back to a 32 bit install - is because I'm starting back at University, and my touchpad kept breaking (amongst other things). I can't really afford to have a laptop that does function fully while I'm studying, it's just not practical.

I may install it in a VM at some point, and I know I'll just install it when it's at the RC stage, just to beat the crowds :p

Unfortunately, I had some issues with my /home partition (I have it separate). So I had to format that too, luckily I have an rsync backup (I had 1 for Intrepid and 1 for Hardy) on my server. So I install gftp and grabbed all the stuff I wanted from there :) Now all is back up and running smoothly, I don't think I've missed off any app's that I had installed previously!

Google Chrome

There's been what I would describe as "mass press overload" on Google Chrome since it's release a day or 2 ago (depending on time zones). So I thought I'd join in ;) And yes - I'm currently posting this from Chrome, running on Windows Vista.

Unfortunately, I can't try it out on Ubuntu just yet, as there's no Linux builds, and trying to build it from source won't work, many have tried. People were hopeful that it would run in wine...No dice. So we'll just have to wait. Until then, I can continue merging and moving threads about on the forums. Which have been literally inundated with threads regarding the browser, so there is now a "Google Chrome MegaThread" :p

I have to say, I actually quite like it...now that the EULA has been revised that is. And it renders very quickly (Yes - faster than Safari, which according to Apple is "the fastest, easiest-to-use web browser in the world" - perhaps they should rethink that statement?).

As this blog seems to be getting a lot of hits still concerning Acid3, I tried Google Chrome from the same acid test website. And it gets....78/100! I think that's pretty respectable, though it fails the LinkTest (screenshot supplied below).

Anyway - more on this later, possibly when there's major improvements or a Linux version :)

Update: I forgot to add the screenshot of the Acid test, here it is!
