Now, I’m sure a great many of you have at least looked into getting dedicated web hosting or VPS Servers at some point or another, I know I have! The real killer on it for me, was partly cost, and partly due to the fact that I would be limited as to what was on there, as I couldn’t install anything on the server – no company would give you root access for obvious reasons.
Well I found out that’s not quite true! Slicehost give you FULL root access. How or why may be what you’re thinking…well it’s because you actually have a virtual machine on one of their servers. What’s even better is that they’re not slow servers either!
I personally have a 256 Slice as I don’t really need a massively powerful server. I’ll let you read the other types of slices on their website, but the 256 Slice gives me:
- 256MB RAM
- 10GB Hard Drive Space
- 100GB Bandwidth
I personally think it’s a brilliant idea, and it costs me $20 per month (now as I’m in the UK that works out to about £11.50). Some people may have noticed that I’m on IRC 24/7 now too…screen and irssi work great for that
I should also point out that all the servers you can install are Linux servers, they offer plenty (I noticed Gentoo 2007.0 got updated to 2008.0 recently) – mine runs…Ubuntu of course
From my (albeit brief) experience, I’d highly recommend Slicehost to anybody looking for hosting of any sort next time you’re in the market for it.

Another I’ve had good experience with is Linode.com Their servers are pretty fast too, from what I’ve seen.

I’ve been using a similar VPS from Gandi.net since January. The service was a beta up to recently, but it’s very stable since they hammered some bugs/infrastructure bottlenecks around this summer.

Another +1 for Linode (and Slice as well). Both hosts are highly competitive and give very similar offerings. I chose Linode because of all of the free upgrades they throw out and the “do what you want, as long as it’s legal and doesn’t take out the network” policy. Meaning I can use IRC.

I have been using Tektonic VPS for my personal website. It has more RAM and is cheaper. Just to let you know there is other option.

I use myself a SliceHost Hardy server as my “Cloud” and for some websites.
It’s awesome!

‘Nother SliceHost user. I use SliceHost at work, and it’s been working great for like half a year now. =)

I personally use bitfolk, they’re cheaper (yay), have great tech support, and a great community behind them, and are based in the UK

I’ve been with Slicehost for just over a year now, and not had a single issue. Best hosting provider I’ve ever used!

We went with Linode (http://www.linode.com/) recently for the Mudlet (http://mudlet.org/) project. It’s $20 a month too, full root access Ubuntu, but it’s additionally 360MB ram and 200gb bandwidth instead of Slicehosts 256mb ram and 100gb bandwidth.

Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll definitely check them out.
Though the lack of a credit card did cause some issues

Well, I think it’s only worth the while if you go for the cheapest solution (20 bucks/month). Otherwise I’d go for a dedicated server in Germany anytime:
http://www.hetzner.de/hosting/produktmatrix/en-rootserver-produktmatrix/
The prices are way lower than anything I’ve found so far, and I’ve been operating 3 servers for some time now and I’m pretty happy with the service.

+1 for linode

I have noticed you leave often (:qa!)
but any way it does sound like a great deal. I might even think about it just for proxying my downloads to…
wget internet && tar -czf internet.tar.gz tar /internet && mv internet /var/www/html/

Hey Johl. I did mean to reply, must’ve got sidetracked
Slicehost are good, though I know there are cheaper vps hosts out there. Look at http://www.cheapvps.co.uk if you want to save a bit.
That said, Slicehost’s customer service were brilliant, the only downside is you need a credit card, I had to go round the houses to get around that
