TV Ad’s
So, for those of you who aren't aware - Microsoft appears to be marketing both IE8, and Windows 7...the theme of these is an 8 second advert (for IE8), or 7 seconds in the case of Windows 7. Not bad, emphasises the names of both products.
I'm unsure where these ads are being shown - but they appear to be on far too frequently in the UK, to the point where some people will probably get sick of the sight of them. The thing that interests me the most, however, is that Microsoft feel the need to advertise these...I think I understand why they are, but it shows that times have changed from when Microsoft was almost guaranteed to be on any PC.
I believe that the IE8 advertising is probably limited to Europe. The reason I make this (fairly large) assumption, is because of the EU ruling which ruled bundling IE8 was unfair to competitors, only last week did Microsoft push out an update which advertised alternative browsers to those users who still had IE8 as a default browser. Admittedly, more than 1 of these was based on the Trident engine, the same as IE8.
As for Windows 7, I've got a strong suspicion that a slow (but steady) decline in the OS market share has Microsoft a little worried, and they're starting to push Windows 7 as much as they can, not to mention the catastrophe that came before 7...more commonly known as Vista

Yeah, I’ve seen the IE8 advert on German TV.

The other reason to advertise Windows 7 is that people didn’t upgrade to Vista as much as they’d have liked, because of all the bad press about it. They want XP and Vista users to upgrade, and they want them to seek out Windows 7 on a new computer when they upgrade the hardware.
I must say, I think some of those adverts are very clever, and it is nice to see Microsoft trying!

Well here in the US i see a few Windows 7 commercials but I have yet to see one for IE8. But then again i don’t watch a lot of tv so maybe. I have never however saw an ad for Firefox or Opera either and the latest Opera is incredibly fast. Faster than any full featured GUI web browser i have tested so far. Tho I am and probably always will be a FF fan, bugs and all

What are you using a source of information for MS losing marketshare?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say this again, Vista is the best operating system by MS. Never before have so many users moved to Linux

They’re doing TV ads for Bing too.
I actually quite like the IE8/W7 campaign – it’s clever, informative, and to the point. Not so convinced by the Bing ads.

“TV Ads” not “TV Ad’s” unless some ad owns something.

They’re even using Bing to sponsor episodes of Simpsons on C4 now. Most of the IE8 adverts seem to be on five.

I’d guess its mostly intended to persuade people that it’s actually worth upgrading their windows xp installs.

I’ve also seen the IE8 Ad in German TV. I think that this ad isn’t so successfull…. The most TV viewer don’t even know with which browser they are surfing.

I don´t know what that advert is good for. I don´t use the Internet Explorer, and nobody had to offer me alternate browsers, I just was told by friends that there are better browsers and changed to Firefox. So I don´t think that many people will change their browsers now. And I don´t understand the problem with Vista, I´ve got it on my notebook, and everything works fine.
