I apologise for my appalling play on words, I couldn’t resist :)

The area I live in very rarely gets snow, where the rest of the UK grinds to a halt, we seem to be able to carry on. Though this morning, I got a rather pleasant surprise of waking up to this

Rather than go out and get cold, I decided to have a nice hot drink, and finally fix sendmail on my VPS. Once I’d done that, I decided to check my blog again, noting that it was out of date (it was running WP 3.0.1) I took the time to upgrade it to the latest version. I figured I may as well be productive while I felt like doing it :)

Casual gaming is becoming a big thing, I’m sure we can all agree that Zynga creators of the annoyingly popular FarmVille (just a personal opinion), and it’s growing array of *ville games, has proven this. Worthy of note here is that the platform for a lot of these games is Facebook. With the links that these games ask to put out from time-to-time, I guess we could say that it’s more “Social Gaming” rather than “Casual Gaming”.

I recently came across an offering from Soshi Games, a fairly new company based in the UK. Their offering takes on a somewhat different spin to most other Facebook games I’ve come across, in that it truly has a social side. Soshi Games have partnered with organisations such as Kiva, Fair Trade USA and Keep Britain Tidy, in order to raise awareness, as well as funding for the organisation. Needless to say, the idea intrigued me, and I checked out their first release – Village Raffles – on Facebook.

The game is simple, and can get surprisingly addictive, but more than anything, it’s nice to see a fresh take on things. I’m sure everybody has a ‘feel good movie’, those ones you watch to put a smile on your face and generally cheer you up. Village Raffles felt almost like a ‘feel good game‘, you enter the raffles for venues in your current location which add to a total required to complete ‘Appeals’ for that location. There is also a link from the game to some of the charitable causes being helped by the game. The idea is a good one, and I look forward to seeing more things from Soshi Games, who I’ll be following throughout 2011 – supporting a good cause is never usually a bad thing :)

The printer we have at home is an Epson Stylus DX4200 – I dislike it rather a lot, but it works so there’s no need to buy a new one. When I say it works, I mean it prints. It prints fine from every OS I’ve tried it on except one.

Now at this point, I imagine some of you will be thinking that it’s Ubuntu that the printer doesn’t play nice with. Quite the opposite is true, it works perfectly with Ubuntu via my Airport Extreme, it is in fact Windows 7 that doesn’t play nice with the printer (OS X works on it, as does XP & Vista). I’ve even installed the correct printer drivers on Win7, but no joy, it just will not work.

On the plus side, this gives me good reason to suggest a new printer, so does anybody have any recommendations in mind? I’d quite like a colour laser printer, however, the problem lies with other peoples use of the printer, such as scanning documents etc.

I’m sure that, to a lot of the people reading this on Planet Ubuntu, this post will be of little interest. If you’re one of these people, I apologise, please glance over this post :)

To everybody else, what I’m about to discuss, and demonstrate, is some sample photos, and my thoughts, however brief, on the new HDR photo option coming in iOS 4.1 next week.

Sample 1 - HDR

As you can see here, the image on the left looks…ok, it’s not to bad, especially for something taken on a mobile phone. However, I feel that my laptop screen is looking rather bright, and almost dominates the shot, given that it’s just a huge blob of white. The cupboard on the left of the image is quite dark, as is the space to the right of the cupboard in the centre of the shot.

When we compare this to the second image, we can see that the cupboard on the left is that little bit clearer, and you can see that the wall on the right hand side is, in fact, red. Further to this, that overly-intrusive laptop screen, which was previously bright white, is now much clearer, and far less intrusive, you can make out much more of the on-screen detail. The cupboard in centre-shot also appears lighter, especially in the areas surrounding the unit.

As we can see in the second sample image, the screen (funnily enough) dominates the image. Nothing wrong with that here, it was the point of the exercise. What we can see, is that it looks like I’m working in the lowest lighting conditions I could possibly find. This, I’m pleased to say, isn’t quite true. I did actually have a light on, as you can see more in the HDR example on the right. I have to say, however, that the HDR example makes the images on my screen look more washed out than those in the non HDR sample do, at least, in my opinion.

Summary

One thing I did notice, was the lack of flash on HDR photo’s. The software prevents the use of both at the same time, which, initially, I found somewhat odd and incredibly frustrating. I had a play around taking images with flash on, and HDR on, but still found no way to add the two together. It then dawned on me this morning, that when a photo is going to need a flash to provide the necessary lighting, chances are the HDR image would like almost exactly the same, and provide no benefits.

Nonetheless, I’d like to see the option, in a subsequent iOS update, for the ability to have both on, where it’s possible to set the flash to ‘Auto’ with HDR on, and if a flash is required due to low level lighting, don’t take a HDR photo. Something like this, in my opinion, would make the feature better than it already is. In all, I have to say, I’m pleased with the update – mainly because I don’t take photo’s all that often, so it doesn’t really benefit me to go out and purchase a proper digital camera, but a 5 megapixel camera with HDR functionality that’s on a device I carry around all day anyway, is perfect for me.

Now, for those of you who haven’t heard of swype, I suggest you head on over to http://swypeinc.com and take a look, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. I think the beta is open for another couple of days.

Essentially, it allows you to “swype”over the word your want to type and, somehow, it works! Though it does appear that it’s only available for android at the moment, unfortunately.

And yes, this entire post was written from swype on my phone.

So as I’m sure a great many of you are all aware of, WordPress 3.0 has been released, fixing a number of new bugs, bringing some new features…and probably bringing new bugs (it’s to be expected, let’s be honest), though I’m sure that won’t get advertised!

As I upgraded, I decided to change my theme. I quite like the new theme, it makes a change to have a bit of colour on my blog, which I quite like, though I do still have the old theme kicking around on the server, should I decide to change my mind. Another change, is the VPS on which this blog is hosted, which is now hosted by Fivebean. So far, no real issues, the minor issue I initially had was dealt with promptly and explained thoroughly, I’d definitely recommend giving Fivebean a look if you’re in the market for a VPS :)

I do have one small issue currently, which I’m not sure whether it is being caused by WordPress, PHP, Apache, or the VPS setup on Fivebean’s part, whereby directly after a reboot the RAM usage sits at around 300MB, and refreshing the WP dashboard causes usage to jump upwards by around 200MB. Now I know WordPress likes its RAM, but not that much, it certainly wasn’t an issue on the old VPS. Anyway – more news on that as it comes.

Well it was only fair to check what it was :)

I’m quite happy with this!

So, for those of you who aren’t aware – Microsoft appears to be marketing both IE8, and Windows 7…the theme of these is an 8 second advert (for IE8), or 7 seconds in the case of Windows 7. Not bad, emphasises the names of both products.

I’m unsure where these ads are being shown – but they appear to be on far too frequently in the UK, to the point where some people will probably get sick of the sight of them. The thing that interests me the most, however, is that Microsoft feel the need to advertise these…I think I understand why they are, but it shows that times have changed from when Microsoft was almost guaranteed to be on any PC.

I believe that the IE8 advertising is probably limited to Europe. The reason I make this (fairly large) assumption, is because of the EU ruling which ruled bundling IE8 was unfair to competitors, only last week did Microsoft push out an update which advertised alternative browsers to those users who still had IE8 as a default browser. Admittedly, more than 1 of these was based on the Trident engine, the same as IE8.

As for Windows 7, I’ve got a strong suspicion that a slow (but steady) decline in the OS market share has Microsoft a little worried, and they’re starting to push Windows 7 as much as they can, not to mention the catastrophe that came before 7…more commonly known as Vista :)

Things like this really bug me, which, given the subject, it really shouldn’t! I don’t know if I’m alone here, but suffering from a lack of motivation to do something you normally enjoy frustrates me.

A couple of examples: I’m working on a project with one of my friends (a Java application, for the more curious of you), and from time to time, I’ll sit and code into the early hours of the morning without realising…other times, despite enjoying coding, I’ll open up the code, look at it, and think “I really can’t be bothered”, despite the fact earlier that day, I was totally motivated and yearning to do it.

I’m not sure why this happens, or if it happens to anybody other than myself, but it doesn’t stop it being any less frustrating ;)

Anyway…time to go back to work!

Before I start – no, this isn’t a Star Wars post :) Sorry!

I currently have an iPhone, and no, I’m not ashamed to admit it, though it is a little awkward that I can’t sync it with my desktop. I’m also not ashamed to admit that I love it, I really do. But as with a lot of things, I find the Apple design of the phone a little restrictive. Sure it’s polished, and it looks sleek and sexy (to some at least), but I just can’t help feeling that I’d prefer an Android phone.

I’ve been looking, albeit briefly, at what Android phones are available on the UK market. Out of the choices, I think I’d prefer a Nexus One, though as far as I’ve seen – they’re Vodafone exclusive, and I’m on an O2 contract, so it’s a no-go. I’d love to hear from some of you guys that have Android phones, and what phones they are, because I’m definitely in the market!
