Mono (A Free C# Compiler)

I installed mono on my laptop earlier, and it installed a command prompt application to compile my C# programs.

The problem is; I use cygwin for my C compiling and ssh-ing into the University servers. SO obviously I wanted mono installed in cygwin.

Luckily I found a way to do it:

  1. Download the mono for windows installer
  2. Run the installer, and select your cygwin folder for the installation directory (in my case this was C:\cygwin)
  3. Install
  4. Open cygwin and type "mcs" without quotes, and if it's installed correctly it should spit back a load of rubbish about no files at you.

Hope this helped anybody who was struggling to do this.

C#

One of my modules at University is C Programming, which I have to say, I am quite enjoying, as I've always enjoyed programming.

However a friend of mine is starting doing C# (C Sharp), and asked if I'd do it, which I said I would.

So I might start learning that soon, just got to wait to see if we can have a proper lab session on it first. Though I might have a bash over the weekend, I'll probably download Visual C# Express Edition or something to try it out.

Virtual Machines

Ok so I'm running Ubuntu in a virtual machine at the moment, but still posting this from Windows Live Writer.

I have to say, that its great running a VM, purely because with my laptop, which has 2GB, and a core 2 duo, which itself supports things like this, can run Windows Vista, and Ubuntu 7.10 at proper and decent operating speeds...it's brilliant!!

I don't really know what else to say, so that's it, downloading MS Expression Studio off the MSDN Academic Alliance, I'll post saying how good or bad I think it is probably :P

Xbox Repair

As I mentioned in an earlier blog post, my Xbox 360 died on me the other day.

I emailed Microsoft support, and they then emailed me a UPS label to print, but based on the fact it's not my fault it's broken, I figured "why should I print the label?!" So I instead phoned Xbox customer support.

They told me that I would get the label sent to my home address, however that was around 3-5 days ago, and UPS are infinitely better than the Royal Mail, so I knew there was something up there.

I've just got off the phone with Xbox support again, and told them to send me the label via email, because I don't seem to get post anymore, so I'll print the label at Uni, and then phone UPS.

C Programming

Ok so in my Uni course, I have a module - Programming In C, which is basically exactly what the name suggests. We do the programming on Mac's because it's a Unix based system, not Windows, and C + Unix = Made for each other or so we keep getting told.

I have a Linux system at home, but not that I can access frequently, so I downloaded and installed Cygwin which is some sort of compatibility layer for Windows, but which basically allows me to compile & run my C programs in Windows.

Was a bit of a hassle getting it to work at first, but I've got it all sorted now, and it works...so I'm not going to fiddle :)

Viva Piñata

Ok so I went into town earlier because I had a 2 hour break at Uni, and I had a look in Game, as you do.

I ended up walking out with Viva Piñata, and it does look quite good, and I enjoyed the demo, I'll admit that. Plus it was only £13 so that's why I bought it, I'll probably do another post letting you all know what I think when I've played it some more.

My Uni Website Project

Posting this means I can use a tag I've created more than once!!!

Anyway, I'm just uploading a few changes to my website (find it here) I know there's nothing on the Homepage yet, but if you check the About, Why & Why Not pages they do have something on them, I've updated the style mainly.

Doing this did allow me to see the versatility of CSS and how easy it is to change the layout of a whole website with about 8 extra lines of CSS code.

Broadband Speed

I was at Uni (well I still am actually) and I did a broadband speed test. You'll find the result below, I was surprised & envious at the same time.

speedtest

I want broadband that fast!!!

Windows Live Writer

So I've just started using Windows Live Writer to give it a try, must say that it looks very pleasing to the eye.

I'm just writing some more to my webpage for my Uni project. It's about switching Operating System from Windows to Ubuntu Linux, it's got to be 10 pages long and be in Valid XHTML Strict, and I can only use Notepad or something similar to create it.

I wish it was only as simple as writing this blog :P

Anyway, back to work now, for ½ hour before I go to bed, I've got to be on a bus in about 9 hours

Twitter

Ok, so I just started using Twitter about ¬Ω an hour ago. It's quite good, I'm trying to get some of my friends to use it, as I think it'd be a good way to know what they're doing, and to let them know what I'm doing.

Either way - I'll be using it, you'll find something in the sidebar to prove this.

As well as this, I've been working on a project for Uni which requires me to write 10 web pages (minimum) in valid XHTML Strict. You can check that out here. I know that there's nothing on the homepage, it's just the barebones at the moment (except the about page and the why switch page).

Anyway, I'm off to bed, as it's 2.16am and I have to be in Uni in 12¬Ω hours lol
