All Settled In
I’m running from my new VPS now. It has a healthy 1GB RAM (much better than the 384 I used to have!). And everything seems to be running smoothly.
I did have possibly the most unusual method of moving my blog over – in that I zipped up the directory, moved it over to the new VPS, and imported the database, same for the apache2 settings. Luckily, 98% of it went without a hitch! A few issues with virtual hosts and mod_rewrite, but that’s all.
I now have a constant IRC presence, because I’m no longer limited by the VPS provider on what I can and can’t use (gotta love having a friend with a server!). And yes – it’s running Ubuntu 8.04 Server
Moving Home?
I’m thinking of moving this blog over to joeb454.com
As some of you know, I recently bought a MacBook, and I realised I didn’t have a page up on my .com domain, so I decided to kill 2 birds with 1 stone, and had a play with iWeb ‘09. The end result isn’t bad, and moving the blog over to my VPS provider would mean 2 things:
1) I’d actually be using my VPS for something
2) I’d have a more fine grained control over my blog, because I would be hosting it myself. Currently this blog is hosted by wordpress.com
It could mean I’d need to upgrade my VPS package, because currently I only have 384 MB RAM on there. I guess it all depends on how much MySQL decides that it wants to take, though before upgrading I’d look into tweaking some MySQL settings to see if I can reduce the amount it needs.
Ultimately I’d like to do this just because of number 1 above. But also it would teach me some more about Apache, MySQL, possibly PHP. I may also look into changing the site at some point, possibly to a Drupal installation, but we’ll have to wait and see
Any thought’s on whether you think this would be a worthwhile move, or any recommendations you have on tweaking various settings on the server (it runs Ubuntu 8.04) would be fantastic!
Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) Pt. 2
So I’ve had 8.10 installed for just under a week now, and so far, all is well
I have actually been making use of a tabbed Nautilus (yay!) which I didn’t think I would. I’ve also been using my VPS to torrent the desktop and alternate versions of Intrepid (32 bit versions). Stats of that at the time of writing are:
Desktop – Uploaded: 8126 MB
Alternate – Uploaded: 1680 MB
As you may have guessed – the alternate iso has only been seeding for a day or so. But this is what VPS’s are for
I’ll continue seeding until Sunday night (GMT).
As for what I think of Intrepid on my laptop…well…I love it (as always). The only downside to it that I can complain about is the fact that unless I play my audio at near inaudible volumes (thus defeating the object of audio
). The sound distorts like a music concert recorded on a mobile phone (cell phone for the Americans reading this
).
Luckily – I don’t need to use the sound a lot, I’ve been playing my music from my iPhone and it’s dock, as it has a lineout on the rear of the dock
All in all – I think Intrepid is a decent release, though I totally understand people sticking with 8.04.1 as it’s an LTS. I mean, I was considering it, but I love upgrading!!
In other news – that isn’t worthy of it’s own post – I’m going to be going to a LUG meeting next week, it’ll be the first time I’ve ever been, so I’m a little nervous, but I’m sure I’ll enjoy it. I’ll let you know
Ubuntu 8.10 – My Thoughts So Far
I know it’s only Alpha 4, but I decided to install it on my laptop last night because I can, and I had nothing else to do.
So far so good, it’s got to be said! There’s a few issues I’ve noticed though, these are:
- gvfs-trash errored out on first boot, doesn’t seem to work
- gnome-power-manager did the same
- Shutdown from the shutdown menu doesn’t work
- Keyboard shortcuts don’t work
Now I can’t really comment on the first 2 because I just sent off the error reports and then I got no more prompts…or running applications
Though shutdown is an odd one, I have the button on the far right of my top panel, and under the system menu. Trying to shutdown or restart from either doesn’t work at all. I hope this gets fixed soon, until then I may added a launcher to my panel to shutdown instead;)
Keyboard shortcuts is a pain, I have a keyboard shortcut for the terminal, but it doesn’t work
So I tried changing it to a different key combo – still no dice. It’s a shame, it’s only now that I’ve realised how much I used it. I hope this also gets fixed really soon, so I can remove the terminal icon from my top panel.
Other than that I’m really enjoying the Intrepid Experience so far. The “newhuman” theme has grown on me quite a bit. I actually quite like it now, I was unsure at first. Also Compiz works great (cube deformation & 3d windows have been added to my features). On Ubuntu 8.04 running 3d Windows made my laptop grind to a halt…smooth as anything now
I’m happy!
I’ll post more thoughts after Alpha 5, Beta & RC etc.
Until then – have a screenshot or 2
- Intrepid w/ “newhuman” theme
- Cube Deformation + 3D Windows
UPDATE: Thanks to this comment I managed to get my terminal shortcut back – so thanks for that
I still think that’d be classed as a bug though.
My Laptop Has Been Suspended!!
Yes that’s right – I had a fiddle with the power settings on my Ubuntu installation earlier
I’m pleased to say that suspend works great with my laptop
Which I’m sure will come in useful while moving between lectures at Uni when I go back.
Not much else to say really, I’m just glad it works! Holiday next week, so no posts for around 2 weeks
Qosmio Review: Part 3c
HD DVD Playback
As I mentioned in part 1 of this review, the Qosmio has a HD DVD-R Drive
Now as I have a few HD-DVD’s, I figured I would try this out. Especially given that it also sports a Full 1080p HD Screen!
So I popped in the HD DVD (The Matrix if you must know) and the HD DVD player launched. I have to admit, this slowed the system down a little, and changed the theme to Windows Vista basic, however I expected this, as playing HD content requires a lot of processing power.
I should also mention that if I paused the movie, and minimised the player window, I was able to do other things (i.e. yesterday I was torrenting the new Ubuntu 8.04 release all day).
So, overall, combined with the killer audio system, the HD DVD playback was brilliant, the images were sharp, black’s were very dark etc. I think the sharpness of the image was helped a little by the small 17″ screen – It’s small when you consider I watch HD movies on a 37″ screen usually
– however I can’t really say much more than this, other than the playback was flawless
So I’ve attached some screenshots, though I don’t know how good the image quality will be, I know it won’t do justice to the HD images
Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Beta Part 2
I’ve posted my thoughts of Ubuntu 8.04 Beta up on http://blog.joeb454.com
If you want more precision, click here
I hope you enjoy reading it.
Ubuntu 8.04 LTS
I’m writing this from the Live CD of the Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron) Beta.
I’m REALLY impressed, more than I was with Gutsy (7.10)! I’ll most likely be installing this later on tonight, and I’ll put up the results on my other blog (blog.joeb454.com) afterwards. I’m out til later tonight, and most of tomorrow, but the results will definitely be up at some point
Everything seems to be working out the box which is nice.
Also this mark’s the first time I’ve used a Linux disc-burning app…I’m using Windows less and less now-a-days, though despite that, I’ll keep it on my laptop, just because I’d find it hard to delete something I’ve paid for
