Sorry for the Mathematical title 
As you’ve undoubtedly guessed – I’ve upgraded to Lucid, a.k.a 10.04!! So far, from what little time I’ve been able to use it, I’m really liking what I see (I’ve installed the 64 bit version, for those curious). Naturally there are some bugs, but I’m reporting these using the built in tool if/when they occur.
One thing that did frustrate me (immensely), while trying to install Lucid, was the partitioning situation. I wiped my Ubuntu partition(s) completely, including my /home and everything. I decided before installing that I’d make backups of the important stuff, and go from there. Somewhat frustratingly, the partition manager mid-way through ubiquity decided to give up the ghost and die. Not a problem, I thought, as I downloaded the daily live CD, I’ll just install from here….no go – the daily live CD was showing exactly the same issues as the Alpha 2 disc.
Before I ditched my attempts to install Lucid and drop back down to Karmic (9.10), I figured I’d try running GParted, and create the partitions before running ubiquity. Good job I did! This worked fine, without any hitches. Naturally I think I should’ve been able to specify my partitions as part of the ubiquity installer, but at least it’s installed now! More on my Lucid thoughts as I get any experiences to share with it.
Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) – My Thoughts So Far
As I’m sure plenty of you are aware, Ubuntu 9.04 is due to be released in little over a month’s time. Testing is in full swing (Alpha 6 at time of writing), and the beta should be coming in 2 or 3 weeks (that’s a guess on my part, please don’t hold me to it!). I figured it was about time to try and install it, partly because I’m interested to see how well it currently runs on my dual-head setup, partly because I need to write an article on installing it for Linux Identity
So – I popped in the Jaunty Live CD, got to the boot menu. All is going well so far, I expected it to not boot though due to my graphics card (Nvidia 9500GT) and a Dual-Screen setup….ok I’m on the desktop (that was quick!). My dual-screen setup was detected just fine (with both monitors at the correct resolution no less!) I was already impressed just from that. I had a play around, and it took me all of 5 minutes to decide that I wanted to give it a proper try out, and to backup my home and install it properly.
1 reboot later, past the (in my opinion) great new GDM theme and nice new splash screen, I’m logged in, installing my nvidia drivers (180.xx) as recommended by a little pop-up. After that install and reboot, I get compiz effects working great, as well as an extended desktop – awesome!
After a bit more playing, I have the dust theme installed (it’s come a long way since I last used it), as well as having emesene using the new notification system (which I have to say looks great!). I’m also running on an ext4 based system, and so far – all is well. Hopefully I’ll have more to say when the beta is released, but this is running on my main desktop, so it’s getting plenty of use 
UPDATE:
I’ve got to say, after using jaunty some more this morning, one thing struck me…it’s REALLY quick. Boot is way faster than 8.10 and running general. Shutdown is quicker too
Ubuntu 8.04 LTS
I’m writing this from the Live CD of the Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron) Beta.
I’m REALLY impressed, more than I was with Gutsy (7.10)! I’ll most likely be installing this later on tonight, and I’ll put up the results on my other blog (blog.joeb454.com) afterwards. I’m out til later tonight, and most of tomorrow, but the results will definitely be up at some point Everything seems to be working out the box which is nice.
Also this mark’s the first time I’ve used a Linux disc-burning app…I’m using Windows less and less now-a-days, though despite that, I’ll keep it on my laptop, just because I’d find it hard to delete something I’ve paid for
KDE 4
I’m planning on trying out KDE 4 in the coming days, as there is now a Kubuntu 7.10 liveCD with KDE4 preinstalled. I’ll post something back when I’ve said what I think. So far everything I’ve heard is positive, which is good…but I’ve always found KDE a bit too bloated & Windows like in it’s presentation.
